I am a story-teller and therefore my illustrations, drawings and paintings will always be narrative, whether they were made with books or with frames in mind. But then again … isn’t everything a narrative of some kind?

Where it all started

I was born on a farm on the Springbok Flats in the Limpopo province of South Africa. My mother read us stories, taught us songs and encouraged us to be creative and discover new places. We could never have enough drawing books and pencils as children and my brother Diek and I even drew on empty envelopes.

Growing up with four siblings, amongst animals (never less than eight dogs in our yard!) and close to nature, might explain my preference for making images featuring animal characters and choosing gardens or the outdoors as settings… and for having an appetite for humour and the ridiculous!

Having lived in South Africa, England and Portugal, (and wishing to live in Holland, Italy and Mexico too) may then explain my love of telling stories of faraway and even unlikely places … and my irritation with boundaries, limitations and rules set in stone.
